1111REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION Agenda Section: 5.
708
STAFF REPORT Report Number: 93-606WS
AGENDA SESSION DATE September 7, 1993 Report Date: 9-2-93
DISPOSITION
Item Description:
Discussion of Curbside Collection of Appliances
Administrator's Review/Recommendation: AgmLizt
- No comments to supplement this report
- Comments attached.
Explanation/Summary (attach supplement sheets as necessary.)
SUMMARY;
In an effort to provide residents with a convenient way of disposing of old appliances, Staff has had
discussions with the Appliance Company of America(ARCA)regarding collecting these materials at the curb
in a one-thy, City-wide event. Under the proposed program, the City would collect the disposal fees on
behalf of ARCA and would provide ARCA with a listing of those homes that have pre-paid their collection
fee. ARCA would then, in turn, bill the City for those appliances collected. This type of program has been
successful in other cities and is a means of ridding the city of unsightly appliances without having to
subsidize a costly clean-up day.
The cost to residents would be$15.00 for the first appliance and$10.00 for each additional appliance (all air
conditioners will cost $20.00 for disposal). This fee includes the cost of curbside pick-up as well as the fees
for disposal. An informational mailing, which will include a registration form and payment information,
would be paid for with SCORE grant promotional funds. No general fund monies would be needed to
sponsor this event.
If the Council is in agreement with these terms, the contracts will be signed for ARCA to perform collection
on October 2, 1993.
0.61-ALU 0-41,6baA31°-
Carla Asleson
Recycling Coordinator
RECOMMENDATION:
