5 <br /> <br /> <br />School Resource Officer (SRO) <br /> <br />The SRO performs various duties on a daily basis at Edgewood Middle School which include <br />the following: <br />• assisting with traffic flow in front of the school, <br />• ensuring the school is secured each morning, <br />• providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the cafeteria <br />during lunch times, <br />• investigating crimes that occur on school property, <br />• assisting with lock down, fire, and severe weather drills, <br />• serving as a member of the school crisis team, <br />• assisting at Pinewood Elementary as needed, <br />• being a liaison between the school and the police department, <br />• forming positive relationships with students, <br /> <br />From January to March, the SRO made the following incident reports: <br />• 4 Disorderly Conduct/Disturbance Reports <br />• 3 Theft Reports <br />• 1 Follow-up Report <br />• 1 Weapon Report (air soft BB gun) <br />From those cases, 3 students were petitioned and 6 were sent to the Northeast Youth and <br />Family Services Diversion Program. <br /> <br />Some of the day to day issues that the SRO assisted the school with during the first quarter <br />included: <br />• transporting students to the out of school suspension program, <br />• using the school surveillance cameras to assist the deans with investigating incidents <br />of theft and harassment <br />• counseling students about the law <br />• deescalating out-of-control students <br />• locating students who are truant <br />• assisting the school with maintenance of their radios <br /> <br />Highlights from 1st Quarter <br />• The SRO gave a presentation on internet safety and cyber bullying to Pinewood <br />Elementary parents and another presentation to 5th graders at Pinewood Elementary. <br />• The SRO provided police presence at 2 school dance/unity events, 2 parent <br />communication nights, and 2 basketball tournaments. <br />• The 5th graders from Pinewood and Sunnyside Elementary came to Edgewood Middle <br />School for a visit and the SRO served as a tour guide for a group of students. <br />• The school district began encouraging students to bring their electronic devices to <br />school this year. As expected, there has been an increase in thefts and missing <br />phones. The SRO thoroughly investigates all of these cases. In one case, he used the <br />stolen phone’s GPS signal to track it to a moving school bus. The SRO pulled over the <br />bus, and narrowed the location of the phone down to two students. When he asked <br />one to stand up, he observed a phone-shaped object concealed in the front of the
