OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS -5- SEPTEMBER 20 , 1993 •
re-name Lakeside Park. At least to bring the Moundsview Council up
to date as to where the Spring Lake Park Council stands on the
issue. There are three areas under this topic I would like to
mention. First of all the was a motion by the Spring Lake Park
Council to invite the Moundsview Council to discuss the re-naming
of Lakeside Park. This is not to suggest a total name-change but
a change to Lakeside Lions Park. This is not to take away from
anyone who worked hard to establish the park in the first place.
However, in the last 4-5 years both cities have felt the crunch of
diminishing funds from the state. This park needed a lot of upkeep
and repairs. The Lions stepped forward and put many, many hours of
work and in the area of $200,000 into upgrading this park. This
included the ball diamonds with bleachers, the walking path, the
bath houses, and blacktopping the area to mention a few. On behalf
of the Lions, I feel that they do deserve recognition for all of
this. They have been very generous and I think we will find that
in the years to come that they will continue to support this park.
The Spring Lake Park Council did make a motion, which passed, to
make this name change. Tonight we would like to get the opinion of
the Moundsview Council, at least some discussion and possible
action.
Mayor Linke stated that, for the record, it is the Spring Lake Park
Lions who have done this work not the Moundsview Lions.
Councilmember Trude asked if this issue did not come before their
Council two or three years ago. Mayor Linke answered, yes.
Mayor Linke stated that at that time the concern of the Council was
that the original founders of the park, who had made great
sacrifices to establish the park, not be lost in the shuffle. The
land for the park was donated by private citizens from Moundsview
and Spring Lake Park, who maintained the park for many years. For
a time there was a Lakeside Park Commission who ran the park. When
this commission disbanded the Parks and Recreation Departments of
the two cities took over the management of the park. When the land
was donated it was written into the deed that if the park was ever
abandoned the land would revert back to the original owners .
Councilmember Trude commented that both cities contributed to the
upkeep and management of the park. She voiced concern that the
public might misunderstand the management of the park if the name
were to be changed to Lions Park, in that they would believe that
the cities were no longer in charge.
Mayor Wells stated that the Lions want recognition for what they
have done and Spring Lake Park feels that they do deserve this.
Originally it was suggested that a plaque be placed on the bath
house, which has been done. It was also discussed that a reader
board be placed at the beach with a brief history of the founding •
of the park. It is a two-city park and this additional funding
has come primarily from the Spring Lake Park Lions.
