r
• OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS -6- SEPTEMBER 20, 1993
Moundsview Councilmember Blanchard questioned whether, if the name
is changed, the Lions would be responsible for maintaining the
park.
Mayor Wells replied that the park would still be maintained by the
cities of Spring Lake Park and Moundsview, with the Lions
continuing to fund special projects and items not covered by the
two city budgets. Mayor Wells stated that neither city could
continue to maintain the park in the manner in which the Lions
have. Mr Wells added that he felt that even if the name were
changed to Lakeside Lions park, the residents of the area would
still refer to it as Lakeside park, as this is how it is known to
them.
Councilmember Blanchard stated that what she is hearing tonight is
very different from what was originally proposed. When this idea
was first presented, she recalls, that the name was to be just
"Lions Park" . She was strongly opposed to this. She agrees that
the Lions have done a "fantastic job" of improving the park and she
does not wish to take away from that. They certainly deserve
recognition and she believes they have received that with the
plaque that was placed at the park, and therefore people do realize
what the Lions have done. She said she has a problem with the name
change because this takes away from the originators of the park,
110 the people who did the "real work" on the park, not just writing a
check and hiring someone to do the work. What is being presented
tonight is different from the original proposal and she could
"possibly" go along with this change. She stated that there are
only four of the original founders still living, two are 88 years
old and the other two are in their 70's. She feels we could just
wait a few more years when their would be no problem in making a
name change.
Mayor Wells stated that we do not want to forget these individuals.
CouncilmemberBlanchard replied that she did not intend to let
anyone forget them. She continued, that she is adament about this.
Those persons who originated the park did all of the clearing of
the park themselves, took railroad ties and went out and dredged
the lake by hand to make a swimming area. They had no fancy
equipment. The VFW donated the flag pole. These people deserve to
be remembered, they did not "hire" the work to be done, they did it
themselves. Now if the name is to remain "Lakeside Lions Park" I
would not argue too strongly against this. If you are proposing to
make a change to "Lions Park" , I would be adamently against that.
Councilmember Trude asked if the Lions are actually doing any work
at the park or just donating their "pull-tab" money.
Councilmember Mathiowetz stated that he felt we should back up a
bit at this point. When the park was started, it was in
cooperation of the two cities together. And it remains in that
