D. Public Works Department - The Public Works Department is responsible for <br /> overall direction of the City's Public Works functions, building inspection <br /> activities, civil engineering, capital improvement projects, fleet management, <br /> street maintenance, water and sewer operations. The major areas of services <br /> provided by the department are as follows: <br /> a. Planning and zoning review, zoning code enforcement, <br /> development review, planning and zoning code review. <br /> b. Recycling coordination and reporting, educational <br /> activities to reduce solid waste disposal problems, <br /> and incentives for recycling. <br /> c. Building inspection, fire inspection, housing inspection, and plan review. <br /> d. Engineering services for water, sewer, street, and traffic operations; capital <br /> improvement projects; and development review. <br /> e. Maintenance of 33 city vehicles and other city equipment. <br /> f. There are 42 miles of streets under the City's jurisdiction. In addition, <br /> 1,400 traffic signs are maintained by City forces. <br /> g. City water production is provided by 6 deep wells. Chlorination and <br /> fluoridation equipment is provided for disinfection and health benefits, <br /> three filtration plants are operated for removal of iron and manganese, <br /> and approximately 250,000 feet of watermains, over 1000 valves, and 400 <br /> hydrants are maintained for distribution. <br /> f. The sanitary sewer collection system consists of 2 lift <br /> stations, approximately 235,000 feet of sewer mains, and over 900 <br /> manholes. <br /> g. Parks maintenance coordination and direction. <br /> The current goals of the Department are improving the efficient delivery of services through <br /> more productive equipment, improved work scheduling, preventive maintenance—programs— <br /> and <br /> aintenance—programs and appropriate response to maintenance needs. <br /> 24 <br />
