Item No. 8J <br />Meeting Date: June 12, 2006 <br />Type of Business: CA <br />Administrator Review: _____ <br /> <br />City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: Mike Sommer, Police Chief <br />Item Title/Subject: Authorization to Purchase a Replacement Squad <br />Car (for a squad totaled in an accident) Utilizing <br />the Settlement Funds From Progressive Insurance <br />and Funds From the Vehicle and Equipment Fund. <br />Date of Report: June 12, 2006 <br /> <br /> <br />NATURE OF REPORT: On May 26, 2006 a Mounds View squad car was <br />involved in an accident at County Road 10 and Edgewood. The squad car was <br />crossing County Road 10 on an emergency run and was struck by a vehicle <br />traveling eastbound on County Road 10. As a result of the collision, the squad <br />car received extensive damage. The damage was reviewed and it was <br />determined that the squad car was totaled, and could not be repaired. The <br />insurance company (Progressive) representing the driver of the vehicle who <br />struck the squad car has agreed to accept 100% of the liability for the damages. <br />The value of the 2004 Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor squad is <br />approximately $12,000. The cost of removing the equipment from the damage <br />squad and placing it on to a new squad is approximately $3000. Progressive <br />insurance company has agreed to pay the city of Mounds View the value of the <br />squad car and the cost of removing the police equipment and reinstalling it into a <br />new squad car. The state bid cost for a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria police <br />interceptor squad car is approximately $23,000. <br /> <br />In order to maintain the fleet of squad cars necessary for the Police Department <br />the damaged squad car needs to be replaced. Superior Ford has a small <br />inventory of white 2006 Ford Victoria police squad cars for accidents such as in <br />our case. They offer these in stock squad cars for a price of approximately <br />$23,000. This replacement squad car would be purchased by combination of the <br />settlement fee from progressive insurance and approximately $11,000 from the <br />vehicle and equipment fund. The police equipment would be stripped and <br />reinstalled into the new car at the expense of progressive insurance companies. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
