Item No. 7I <br />Meeting Date: June 26, 2006 <br />Type of Business: Council Business <br />City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: Kurt Ulrich, City Administrator <br /> <br />Item Title/Subject: Resolution 6853 Authorizing the Contract for <br />Architectural Services for the Preparation of Plans <br />and Specifications for the Mounds View <br />Community Center <br /> <br />Background: <br />On June 5, 2006, the City Council, at a Work Session, reviewed the proposed <br />improvements to the Mounds View Community Center, which included design <br />concept and development level plans. <br /> <br />The Mounds View Community Center Task Force presented its initial report to <br />the City Council on March 6, 2006. Based on that report, the City Council acted <br />to hire DSGW Architects, Inc. to conduct a study of the task force <br />recommendations. <br /> <br />The architect from DSGW, Randy Wagner, worked with the Mounds View <br />Community Center Task Force, the YMCA, and City staff to refine the concepts, <br />make additional recommendations, and to develop a cost estimate for the <br />proposed improvements, estimated at $600,000 plus furniture and equipment. <br /> <br />The next step in the process is to consider the preparation of plans and <br />specifications in order to refine the cost estimates and to develop documents for <br />construction bidding. Under this schedule, the City would order and review plans <br />and specifications for the proposed project prior to holding a public hearing to <br />order the project. <br /> <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />Authorize Detailed Plans and Specifications – The next step in the architectural <br />process is to order the preparation of plans and specifications. <br /> <br />On June 8, 2006, the architectural firm of DSGW submitted a letter of agreement <br />to proceed with the Mounds View Community Center Project by developing <br />detailed plans and specifications for the bidding document phase of this project. <br />This document is attached for the City Council’s review. DSGW has offered to <br />continue to this phase for a fee of 6% of construction costs. The estimated cost <br />of construction for the work at the completion of Phase I is $600,000. Therefore,
