Item No. 7C Meeting Date: September 25, 2006 Type of Business: CB WK: Work Session; PH: Public Hearing; CA: Consent Agenda; CB: Council Business City Administrator Review _______ City of Mounds View Staff Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Greg Lee, Director of Public Works Item Title/Subject: Resolution 6941 Awarding a Contract for the Installation of Carpet and Tile and Authorizing Volunteer Painting for the Random Park Building Replacement Project Background: On December 12, 2005, the City Council adopted a resolution 6700 waiving the public improvement hearing, holding a public information meeting, ordering the project, approving a contract to demolish the existing building at Random Park, and authorizing the preparation of plans and specifications for the Random Park Building Replacement Project. On February 13, 2006, the City Council awarded a construction contract for the Random Park Building Replacement Project. This included moving the former golf course building to Random Park, establishing a foundation, making minor alterations to the building, and grading the site, including creation of a parking lot and storm water quality enhancements. The construction contract amount was $244,647.75 (engineers estimate was $255,000). Discussion: The final interior work, which includes carpeting, tiling, interior painting, and landscaping was planned for but excluded from the original construction contract; this was done as a cost savings measure. Under a construction contract, a general contractor would simply subcontract these items out and add a typical 12 to 15 percent surcharge to the project. It was therefore more cost effective if the City did not include these items in the overall bid for the project. Carpet and Tiling Staff has received quotes for carpeting the main floor area of the building and tiling the restrooms and serving area. The City received two quotes.
