Staff has reviewed the current and projected needs for the City’s light duty truck
fleet for the next fifteen years – the estimated life of a replacement truck
purchased in 2005. It was determined that there is a need, especially in the
Parks Division, to have a pick up truck with a heavier payload and towing
capacity with the versatility to be used as a plow truck.

The Parks Division currently does not have a 4-wheel drive pick-up. In addition to
having the versatility to plow parking lots, as the City continues to plan to add
develop additional trailways, the City must look ahead and forecast the
maintenance needs for eight to ten foot wide trailways (example: the new
trailways on County Road H and existing and planned trailways on County road
10).

The Public Works Department has reviewed the cost of purchasing a
replacement ¾ ton, 4-wheel drive pick up truck via state bid.
• 2005 ¾ ton Pick Up, 4-wheel drive
$22,320.00 state bid
Last date to order: February 25, 2005

For comparison purposes, state bids were also obtained for ½ ton 2-wheel drive,
½ ton 4-wheel drive, and ¾ ton 2-wheel drive pickups. These are:
• 2005 ½ ton Pick Up, 2-wheel drive
$20,528.00 state bid.
Last date to order: Mid March

• 2005 ½ ton Pick Up, 4-wheel drive
$23,140.00 state bid
Last date to order: Mid March

• 2005 ¾ ton Pick Up, 2-wheel drive
$20,998.00 state bid
Last date to order: February 25, 2005

Considering the cost difference, and the existing and future needs of the City to
have a heavier duty pick up truck with the versatility to be used as a plow truck,
Public Work recommends that the City take advantage of these extremely
favorable state bids and purchase a ¾ ton, 4-wheel drive, replacement pick up
truck.

Additional points of consideration:
 Four-wheel drive trucks have not required any more maintenance
than the two wheel drive trucks in our fleet maintenance history.

 The cost difference between a ½ ton, 2-wheel drive pick up and a
¾ ton, 4-wheel drive under state bid is $1,792.00. Over the life
cycle of the pick up this equates to only $119.46 per year.
