Item No. 08B Type of Business: Consent Meeting Date: March 28, 2005 City Administrative Review: ______ City of Mounds View Staff Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: James Ericson, Community Development Director Item Title/Subject: Consideration of Resolution 6483 Authorizing the Hire of Steve Maki to the Position of Part-Time Temporary Building Inspector within the Community Development Department Introduction: On January 10, 2005, the City Council adopted Resolution 6432, which authorized staff to advertise to fill a temporary part-time position for a building inspector within the Community Development Department. Discussion: An announcement for the part-time position was posted with the League of MN Cities, on the City’s website, with local technical schools offering building inspection programs and in the Star Tribune. Twenty individuals applied for the opening, most of whom had some level of education and training in the field of building inspections. Interviews were held with ten individuals having the greatest education and trade experience. Of the ten individuals interviewed by myself and Building Official Kathi Osmonson, one person stood out as being the most qualified for the position, that being Steve Maki. Mr. Maki has more than twenty years of experience in the construction industry, has his limited Building Official certificate and is completing a two-year degree program at North Hennepin Community College. References have been checked and results are very positive. If his hire is approved, Mr. Maki’s start date would be April 4, 2004 and his employment would be classified as part time, temporary. Under this arrangement, Mr. Maki’s employment would last for no more than 26 weeks from the date of hire and would be limited to no more than 40 hours per pay period. The offered rate of pay is $14.00 per hour. Mr. Maki is aware that a full-time temporary position could be created if the Medtronic development moves forward this year and he has expressed a willingness and ability to assume full time duties should that occur. Appointment to that position or any other position subsequent to the initial term of employment however is not guaranteed and is subject to Council authorization.
