Mounds View City Council March 28, 2005
Regular Meeting Page 8

1
Mayor Marty asked whether it could then come back as $6,500 or $7,000. 2
3
Public Works Director Lee stated that the original estimate was around $5,000, but they had 4
given the worst case estimate. 5
6
Council Member Flaherty asked if they knew what the cost of a new one would be. 7
8
Public Works Director Lee stated that he didn’t have that information, but he could look it up. 9
10
Council Member Thomas stated she had also wanted to pull this item because the numbers were 11
jumping out at her, and this company has been maintaining this piece of equipment for three and 12
a half years, and it keeps failing. She asked why there wasn’t better planning on this unit since 13
there has been constant work on it. 14
15
Public Works Director Lee stated that UHL was hired to fix all the corrections that were 16
identified in their report that was put together 3 ½ years ago. He stated he didn’t know how 17
detailed that report was, but he didn’t think this particular one had been identified in that report. 18
He stated there were a lot of issues with it at the Community Center, and they had been making 19
corrections over the last three years. 20
21
Council Member Thomas asked if this was the same unit they had been talking about before. 22
23
Mayor Marty stated he didn’t recall specifically. 24
25
Council Member Thomas stated she didn’t mean to say they were falling down on the job, but 26
she felt this was the same unit they had been having trouble with significantly over the last four 27
years. 28
29
Public Works Director Lee stated that the breakdown was caused by plastic gears that sheared 30
and broke and the shutter door didn’t open. He stated that the proposal was to put metal gears in 31
to make sure this didn’t happen again. 32
33
Mayor Marty asked if they had looked into if they had plastic gears, if they could do some 34
preventative maintenance. 35
36
Public Works Director Lee stated he would have to look into that. He stated he could research 37
that and make sure that the other units are checked so they don’t have the same failure. 38
39
Mayor Marty stated he would prefer to have them check it and maybe do some preventative 40
maintenance so they wouldn’t have to spend more money later. 41
42
Council Member Flaherty stated that it seemed to be a lot of money to replace a heat exchanger. 43
He asked if they had ever contacted Carrier and asked them for a recommendation. 44
45
