Y
410
existing Carmike Cinemas were selected for analysis . Each of the
following cinemas have similar site characteristics , and are
located in suburban areas : •
Location Seats Parkin° Spaces
1 . Greensboro, NC 2 , 080 528
2 . Nashville, TN 3 , 148 831
A parking accumulation study was conducted at each cinema to
determine existing parking demands on Friday, February 7 , 1997
and Saturday, February 8 , 1997 . Parking accumulation counts were
conducted by Wells & Associates staff on Friday from 6 : 00 PM to
12 : 00 AM, and on Saturday from 12 : 00 noon to 12 : 00 AM, and were
recorded in fifteen (15) minute intervals . The peak hour parking
space occupancy and parking ratio for these cinemas is summarized
in Table 1 and hourly data is presented in Appendix A. Table 1
indicates that the average peak hour parking ratio is 0 . 11
occupied spaces per seat on Friday and 0 . 13 occupied spaces per
seat during Saturday. •
Analysis
Due to the significant seasonal variations in the attendance of
cinemas, factors were derived to determine a worst case scenario
for the proposed Carmike Cinema . Based on the parking
utilization data for cinemas contained in "Shared Parking" , a
publication by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) , June and July are
the busiest months for cinemas.. Attendance in February is
approximately 70 percent of the attendance in June and July,
based on actual surveys of suburban cinemas containing over 900
seats .
Sales transaction data was obtained for for the Nashville,
Tennessee site in an effort to compare it to the ULI data . The
Carmike transaction data indicates that June is the peak month
for sales at this facility. As shown in Table 2 , sales in
February are approximately 62 percent of the sales in June . A 411
summary of these results are contained in Appendix B.
