• , Staff Memo To: Economic Development Commission Members From: Cathy Bennett, Director of Economic Development Date: March 24, 1997 ;Subject: Consideration of Appointing a Designee to Participate in the U of (5.D.) M Metropolitan Livable Communities Design Course. The City of Mounds View has been invited by the U of M Design Center for Amrrikan and Urban Landscape to participate in the inaugural Metropolitan Livable Communities Design Course. The course is developed specifically for city step` , officials and citizens and for Mounds View will focus on the Highway 10 Corridor. 1111 There will be no cost for participation in the course but there will be an expectation that a local team will be formed to actively participate in the analysis of the focus issue and development of the course product. Mounds View will be one of five communities participating in the course. I have been trying for years to have the Design Center structure a course around the challenges of the redevelopment of the Highway 10 Corridor and finally they took notice. By participating in this course, Mounds View will be able to tap the U of M technical resources in evaluating key questions such as 1 .) How does a community envision redevelopment of such a valuable resource? 2.)How is the vision of the corridor effectively integrated into the City's revised comprehensive plan? Community Development Director, Pam Sheldon, and I will be the staff representatives for the course. In evaluating the course team we are recommending that a designee from the Planning Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, Economic Development Commission, Council and Business Representative be part o the course team. Please review the attached course description. I will be requesting an EDC designee to be part of the team to participate in this valuable and "free" course.
