Mounds View City Council July 25, 2005
Regular Meeting Page 7

He stated that Staff is recommending that a public hearing be held to allow interested parties an 1
opportunity to speak on this project. 2
3
Mayor Marty opened the public hearing at 7:52 p.m. 4
5
William Werner, 2765 Shorewood Road, asked if Public Works Director Lee stated that there 6
would be air conditioning in this unit. He stated that he is appalled that they would put air 7
conditioning into these buildings adding that it is amazing that the Council would even consider 8
this. 9
10
John Kroeger, 8280 Pleasant View Drive, Chairman of the Parks, Recreation and Forestry 11
Commission, stated that it was the recommendation of the Parks, Recreation and Forestry 12
Commission to include air conditioning in this building due to the number of activities that are 13
held in this building on a regular basis. 14
15
Mr. Werner asked what people would be doing in this building that they would need air 16
condition. He stated that if they want to do something that requires air conditioning they should 17
go to the Community Center. 18
19
David Jahnke, 8428 Eastwood Road, expressed his agreement stating that he can’t believe that 20
the City would put air conditioning in a playground building. He stated that his children grew up 21
participating in recreation programs and none of the buildings had air conditioning then and they 22
all survived the heat. He stated that with all of the other things this City has to take care of they 23
should take into consideration the finances and be more frugal with City funds. 24
25
Cindy Palm, 2266 Terrace Drive, stated that she is a member of the Parks, Recreation and 26
Forestry Commission noting that her son is currently participating in the summer playground 27
program and explained that they are looking at this structure as a community building where 28
family reunions, Lions meetings and Scout activities could take place during the evening and on 29
the weekends. She stated that they want these groups to be able to utilize and enjoy this facility 30
in an air-conditioned capacity, as well as enjoying the playground and other facilities this park 31
has to offer. She stated that this opens up the resources in the City, it is not just about the 32
playground it is also about the community. 33
34
Marta McIntire, YMCA, explained that the Groveland park building is probably the worst park 35
building, as far as its condition is concerned and reviewed with Council. She further explained 36
that one of the factors they considered for the air conditioning is the ability to rent the facility for 37
various events. She stated that they have already received several reservation requests for family 38
reunions due to the air conditioning of the facility. She stated that this is a factor when someone 39
is considering the building for an event. She noted that the air conditioning is a nice feature to 40
include, as it would help increase revenue through the additional events held at this park 41
building. 42
43
Dale Auke, 2458 Sherwood Road, stated that he is also a member of the Parks, Recreation and 44
Forestry Commission. He stated that he is not sure if the air conditioning is the main issue that 45
