Impact: •
Chief Zikmund will discuss the impact to life safety, firefighter safety, and civilian safety during
his presentation. Additionally, information will be provided detailing the substantial insurance
premium savings (47% to 87%) for sprinklered occupancies versus non-sprinklered occupancies,
the cost of installing sprinklers in new construction versus existing, and the budgetary impact of
fire sprinklers with respect to the operating and capital budget.
Summary:
The issue before the council and EDC is the 5,000 versus 2,000 threshold. The remainder of the
code is intact, has been enforced, and continues to be enforced. Changing the threshold requires
evaluation of more government regulation (perceived or real) against the cost savings and life
safety issues that sprinklers are purported to address. As part of the discussion information will
be presented detailing financing of sprinkler systems in budgetary hardship cases.
Prepared by Nyle Zikmund
July 17, 1996
•
•
•
