Item No.8B Type of Business:CB WK: Work Session; PH: Public Hearing; CA: Consent Agenda; CB: Council Business City of Mounds View Staff Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Bill Clark, Chief of Police Item Title/Subject: Resolution 5531 Authorizing the Creation of a School Resource Officer Position in the Police Department Date of Report: February 26, 2001 This item is on the agenda for approval of a resolution to create a new position in the staffing of the Police Department, to provide a school resource officer to Edgewood Middle School. This request was made in August of 1999 by the School District to the City and the Principle of Edgewood came before this Council to answer questions and address issues arising. It was the general consensus of the City Council at that time to go ahead with the process. Several other meetings have occurred between the Principle of Edgewood, the Police Chief and the City Administrator. Although this item has been discussed numerous times at various Council functions, to include budget planning for FY2001, no formal action was ever taken in the form of Resolution. A formal Resolution is needed to finish off the process. The Principle of Edgewood has agreed to attend the Council meeting and answer questions that the current Council might have. The Arrangement brought forth by the School District, is that the School District will fund three- fourths of the salary of the new hire for at least three years. This item has been accounted for in the Police Department budget. The School Resource position will be filled by a veteran Officer, and the new Officer will be a replacement on the street.
