Date of Report: May 9, 2001 Background: Staff has received a request to write a letter of support from Mike Bjerksett from the National Handicap Housing Institute (NHHI) regarding the construction of accessible/affordable housing units in Mounds View. Their proposal contemplates the construction of 20 units of affordable housing for low income physically disabled adults. The proposed location is off of County Road I just behind Super America. Previously, a proposal was received from Milo Pinkerton to construct senior housing on this property with approximately half of the units dedicated to individuals with Alzheimers. Mr. Bjerksett has requested that a general letter written by the city indicating conceptual support for the project. The letter will be included in a grant application submitted to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. A letter written by Mr. Bjerksett has been included at “Attachment 1” for your review. It should be noted that this letter would support the project in concept. Of course, the project would still need to be reviewed on an official basis by the Planning Commission and City Council once specific plans are developed.
