Page 6
November 25, 1996
Mounds View City Council
Mike Ulrich, Public Works Director, explained that the aluminum water tanks on the Jet Truck are
decaying on both the outside and inside. The tanks carry a five year warranty and the manufacturer will
replace them, however it is highly likely that the situation will reoccur after a period of years, and the
existing warranty will terminate at the end of July 1998. To eliminate any future deterioration of the water
tanks, staff obtained a quote from the manufacturer to replace the aluminum tanks with stainless steel. The
cost differential is $2,600.00. If staff remounted the new tanks, the city could save $500.00.
Mr. Ulrich also noted that the south service door at the Public Works facility is rusted out on the bottom
due to constant water contact from the wash bay. -The door no longer closes properly and is contributing to
heat loss. Staff received a quote from Best Locks who is a factory direct representative for a fiberglass
reinforced polyester door, which includes the frame, all hardware, the spring, installation, closure and
locks. The cost for this was $2,275.00.
Mr. Ulrich noted that staff is requesting that contingency funds be used both of these expenditures from the
Waste water account.
Ms. Trude asked why staff did not price shop for the replacement of the door.
Mr. Ulrich noted that this is a specific door. Best Lock is a factory direct wholesale outlet. The door is a
• superior product which was recommended by Best Lock. Furthermore several of the schools have used the
doors and highly recommended them. Mr. Ulrich stated he believes the price is very reasonable.
MOTION/SECOND: Quick/Linke to authorize the transfer of $4,275.00 from the Waste water
Contingency account 730-4123-910 of which $2,000 will be transferred to Waste water Acct 730-4121-
513 Equipment Repairs, and $2,275.00 transferred to Waste water Account 730-4121-121 Buildings and
Grounds for the purchase of a Water Tank and an Entrance Door.
VOTE: 4 ayes 0 nays Motion Carried
B.
