MOU__N_DitSVVttW
City of Mounds View Staff Report
Item #: 6E
Meeting Date: November 15, 2019
Type of Business: EDC
To: Economic Development Commission
From: Brian Beeman, Assistant City Administrator
Item Title/Subject: Hear a Presentation on the Mounds View Schools Career Pathways
Program
Background:
Mounds View Schools is one of the partner school recipients of a Gen Z grant provided through the
Department of Labor's Youth Skills Training program. The Gen Z program is based on the successful
White Bear Lake Schools model and provides paid student manufacturing internships for high school
students.
Mounds View Schools is seeking four manufacturers interested in employing students next summer.
Four students will rotate through four manufacturers during a four -week timeframe. So, each
manufacturer will only have one student each week for four weeks. Please see attached for more
information. This is a wonderful opportunity for industry partners to showcase the manufacturing
industry and provide four students a glimpse of what a career might look like.
An informational breakfast will be held December 3, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., at Jimmy's Food & Drink in
Vadnais Heights. The agenda will include presentations from those manufacturers who participated
in the White Bear Lake program. Those interested in attending, should contact Mindy Handberg,
Director of Community Partnerships, Mounds View Public Schools, 651.621.6094,
mindv.handberq(amoundsviewschools.orq.
Discussion:
Provide feedback and recommend local manufacturing companies who may be interested in
participating in this program.
Recommendation:
EDC to hear the presentation and offer any suggestions and/or contacts of local manufacturing
companies that may be interested in participating in the program and spread the word.
i
Brian Beeman
Assistant City Administrator
Attachments:
1.
