Mounds View Public School's Gen Z Manufacturing Program FAQs
What is the Gen Z program?
Gen Z is an opportunity for employers to connect with high school students, from both
Mounds View and Irondale High Schools, who are interested in learning and exploring
opportunities in the field of manufacturing. Mounds View Public Schools (MVPS) has
received a grant to create a paid, hands-on, experiential internship program for four
students at four local manufacturers during the summer of 2020.
What are the advantages to employers in participating?
Manufacturers throughout the state have reported an increasing number of unfilled
positions, as well as significant challenges in finding qualified and trainable employees
to fill these positions. Many businesses are overwhelmed by the work required to
connect with schools by providing field trips, job shadowing, or classroom presentations.
With this program, MVPS will support manufacturers by selecting well -qualified, "good
fit" student interns and providing related instruction for the students.
Related instruction includes enrollment in at least one of the following MVPS courses:
• Introduction to Engineering Design 1 & 2
• Digital Electronics
• How to Make Almost Anything
• Construction & Solar Energy
• Welding 101
• Auto Technology 1 & 2
• Small Engines & Power Sports Mechanics
Why was this learning model chosen?
We will be building on an existing program that was developed in the White Bear Lake
School District in 2017 with significant input from industry partners and educational
collaborators. Students have participated in paid, hands-on, experiential learning
experiences at area manufacturers. To date, a total of 24 White Bear Lake students
have completed this program, leading to several direct hires of graduates. It's a program
model that has a proven track record, testimonials, and community support, and has
been recognized statewide with the 2017 Economic Development Association of
Minnesota's Partnership Award.
