State Bikewa s -Pro ran <br />The Minnesota Department of Transportation's State Bikeway Grant Program <br />has been an ambitious program designed to develop and identify bikeway <br />corridors which provide for -safe and reasonably direct access to the <br />majority of public and private destinations, while exercising sound <br />transportation engineering and planning procedures in the expenditure of <br />public funds. Many times, parks and open spaces are the destination of <br />persons making use of these bikeways. <br />The Minnesota Recreation and Park Association recognizes the value of <br />this program, which benefits both the bicycle commuter and the <br />recreational cyclist. The Minnesota Recreation and Park Association <br />endorses the State Bikeway Program, encourages strong cooperation <br />between state, county, and local agencies, and recommends funding be <br />reestablished to accelerate an effective program. MRPA will work <br />closely with the State Bikeway Advisory Board to meet their goals. <br />ACTION: MRPA will support legislation which funds the State Bikeway <br />Program. <br />Other Issues <br />Other issues may be discussed during the legislative session that <br />directly/indirectly affects the provision of quality recreational <br />opportunities. Minnesota Recreation and Park association will act as <br />necessary on these items throughout the legislative session. Examples <br />of topic/issues which could be included in this category are: work <br />restitution, prevention of chemical abuse, eminent domain, recycling and <br />disposal of cans, bottles and litter, public access to lakes, water <br />slide regulations, shade tree program, workers' compensation, levy <br />limits and W.,sissippi River Corridor projects. <br />
