Concept design of the Community Center prepared by BWBR Architects. The Community Center will include a multi -use fitness
area, community room, meeting rooms and leisure pool, with construction to begin this summer!
Busy Construction Year Ahead
(To include community center, parks, bikeways & roads)
1989 will be one of Shoreview's busiest
construction seasons ever. Street renewal,
watermains, parks, pathways, trails and a
new community center are only some of
the new improvements.
In November of 1988, voters of
Shoreview approved a park bond issue
allowing the city to proceed with an
aggressive park improvement schedule.
These improvements include construction
-n all eight parks, various trails through the
::ity, and construction of the community
.:anter to house a community room, multi-
-itness area and leisure pool.
Community Center
The architects with direction from the
ity council and it's supporting
,ommissions and committees are currently
lesigning the community center. In
;ddi"n the city council has appointed a
`c:, eview committee made up of
Richard Wedell, mayor; Tom Simonson
and Jerry Haffeman, city staff; and Sandy
Martin and Marsha Soucheray, citizens
members, to aid in streamlining and
reviewing the community center design
and construction.
The community center will be made up
of three component areas. One component
includes a multi -use fitness area. This will
include a multi-purpose gym area for
basketball, volleyball, aerobics etc,; a
gymnastics area elevated running track,
and a fitness and exercise area with various
types of equipment.
Another component will be the meeting
areas. This will include a community
room, which will seat three hundred people
and have limited kitchen facilities, and will
be available for wedding receptions, large
meetings, seminars or other functions. In
addition there will be other smaller
meeting rooms, a crafts room, preschool
classroom, snack bar, skaters warming
room, nursery, and games room.
The most exciting component should be
a leisure pool. The architects are currently
researching and designing numerous
features for this unique and fun pool
concept. Features could include fitness
swimming, water volleyball, a shallow
"beach" area for general play with
fountains, bubblers, and sprays plus a
childrens pool with small water slide, a
large water slide with plunge pool,
Whirlpool/hot tub, lounge area and snack
facilities, tropical plants, rock areas,
tropical island motif and access in summer
months to an outside deck area. The
proposed schedule is to break ground in
July 1989 with completion in the fall of
1990.
