The Community Center will include a multi -use fitness <br />area, community room, meeting rooms and leisure pool, with construction to begin this summer! <br />Busy Construction Year Ahead <br />(To include community center, parks, bikeways & roads) <br />1989 will be one of Shoreview's busiest <br />construction seasons ever. Street renewal, <br />watermains, parks, pathways, trails and a <br />new community center are only some of <br />the new improvements. <br />In November of 1988, voters of <br />Shoreview approved a park bond issue <br />allowing the city to proceed with an <br />aggressive park improvement schedule. <br />These improvements include construction <br />-n all eight parks, various trails through the <br />::ity, and construction of the community <br />.:anter to house a community room, multi- <br />-itness area and leisure pool. <br />Community Center <br />The architects with direction from the <br />ity council and it's supporting <br />,ommissions and committees are currently <br />lesigning the community center. In <br />;ddi"n the city council has appointed a <br />`c:, eview committee made up of <br />Richard Wedell, mayor; Tom Simonson <br />and Jerry Haffeman, city staff; and Sandy <br />Martin and Marsha Soucheray, citizens <br />members, to aid in streamlining and <br />reviewing the community center design <br />and construction. <br />The community center will be made up <br />of three component areas. One component <br />includes a multi -use fitness area. This will <br />include a multi-purpose gym area for <br />basketball, volleyball, aerobics etc,; a <br />gymnastics area elevated running track, <br />and a fitness and exercise area with various <br />types of equipment. <br />Another component will be the meeting <br />areas. This will include a community <br />room, which will seat three hundred people <br />and have limited kitchen facilities, and will <br />be available for wedding receptions, large <br />meetings, seminars or other functions. In <br />addition there will be other smaller <br />meeting rooms, a crafts room, preschool <br />classroom, snack bar, skaters warming <br />room, nursery, and games room. <br />The most exciting component should be <br />a leisure pool. The architects are currently <br />researching and designing numerous <br />features for this unique and fun pool <br />concept. Features could include fitness <br />swimming, water volleyball, a shallow <br />"beach" area for general play with <br />fountains, bubblers, and sprays plus a <br />childrens pool with small water slide, a <br />large water slide with plunge pool, <br />Whirlpool/hot tub, lounge area and snack <br />facilities, tropical plants, rock areas, <br />tropical island motif and access in summer <br />months to an outside deck area. The <br />proposed schedule is to break ground in <br />July 1989 with completion in the fall of <br />1990. <br />(Continued :Vest Page) <br />
