Lois Hoel
April 25, 1989
Page two
It was explained to you that traditionally, summertime, an eight week timespan for
pool use, is devoted to swimming lessons. This is the only opportunity to expand on
swimming instruction because the children are available during the daytime due to
school vacation. Every pool operation within the district takes this opportunity to
provide lessons to meet the high demand. It seems only fair that, while water
exercise is offered during primetime to adults during the Fall, Winter and Spring, the
children's swimming instruction during eight weeks of summertime deserves that same
prime time. It is difficult to answer a parent's questions asking why adults are taking
up daytime summer swimming time since adults are more able to participate in the
evening programs when most children cannot.
In conclusion, I am disheartened that you portrayed the impression of
uncooperativeness when in fact opportunities have been given to you and continue to
be given to you to participate in an aquatics program (for over six years), a program
in which you have found no other City is able to offer.
Cooperativeness requires flexibility on both sides.
Sincerely,
Mary Saarion, Director
Parks, Recreation and Forestry
MS/SL
