MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY DATE: SEPTEMBER 12, 1990 1 SUBJECT: ESTIMATE OF COST TO LIGHT CITY HALL WEST SOFTBALL FIELD As requested by Councilmember Quick, I have received an estimate for lighting City Hall west softball field. A number of years ago Musco Lighting, Inc. provided the City with an estimate of about $50,000 for lighting both City Hall fields, The cost estimate today for lighting the single field is 39 000. Musco is a reputable sports lighting company in the State of Minnesota. Many metro facilities have installed Musco lighting. The lighting is specific and offers excellent playing light. The fixtures and poles are of the highest quality. Musco Lighting recently installed lighting at the New Brighton Freedom Park softball field located on Silver Lake road and the Mounds view High School football field. Staff believes that lighting the west field, allowing for four games per night, would benefit the City for these reasons: 1. One softball field generates parking needs of approximately 54 cars during peak game turnover times from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. This is the same time that parking is needed for Council meetings. Having four games on one field would spread out the parking needs throughout the evening. 2. The vacated field space could provide new opportunities for facilities such as additional parking, tennis courts, green space or other. 3. Playing four games per night on one field versus playing four games per night on two fields would save maintenance time and costs of field preparation. Also, future expenses such as turf control and sprinkling would be less for one field versus two fields servicing the same number of teams. One final note is that the east softball field will most likely be dug up when well number 1 is moved.
