threshold beyond which future problems with blue-green algae
are likely. Consequently, serious consideration should be
given to providing on-site pre -ponding for any major
developments proposed within the drainage area in the
future. A suitable natural location for such ponding
appears available in an existing wet meadow which lies
between County Road I and the old County Road I corridor at
the north end of the drainage area.
IV. STORMWATER SYSTEM
Silver View Pond receives stormwater both overland and via a
number of storm sewer outlets that empty directly into the
pond. The Silver Lake Woods single-family residential
development in the southwest portion of the drainage area
drains to the pond via 3 storm sewer outlets; 12- and 15 -
inch reinforced concrete pipes (RCPs) emptying into the
south arm of the pond and a 27 -inch RCP emptying into the
west arm. This system also drains portions of Silver Lake
Road and County Road H-2.
The Silver Lake Woods Multi -family development in the north -
central portion of the drainage area drains directly to the
pond via 2 18 -inch RCPs. This system also receives drainage
from Silver View Plaza, Super America and Burger Bing at
the north end of the drainage area.
The Scotland Green apartment complex in the southeast
portion of the drainage area largely drains to the pond
overland, though there are several small culverts that serve
as surface drains from the northernmost parking areas. all
other portions of the drainage area drain overland to the
pond. Silver View Park partially drains directly to the
pond and partially to a wetland area adjacent to Silver Lake
Road. This wetland then drains via an intermittent
drainageway to the west arm of the pond.
V. BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BASIN
A. Aquatic Vegetation
Aquatic macrophytes within Silver View Pond were mapped on
July 24, 1989. The distribution and density of macrophytes
varied with water depth and location. The predominant
aquatic macrophytes were elodea (Elodea canadensis), water
milfoil (MXriophXllum verticillatum), white water lilies
(jymphaea odorata, and yellow water lilies (Nuphar
variegatum). In scattered, very shallow locations along the
fringes of the pond, lotuses (Nelumbo lutea) have become
established. A few floating colonies of blue-green algae
were observed. The pond margins were vegetated with typical
emergent wetland plants including cattails (Typha
latifolia), spike rush (Eleocharis palustris),and hardstem
bulrush (Scirpuus acutus).
74
