There are many characteristics that make a good recreation/sports leader. The
following are some of the more important characteristics to exhibit in your relationships
with the recreation/sports participants.
A. ENTHUSIASM - never portray an attitude of boredom or laziness. The
kids will only get out of the program what you put into
it. Your summer will be much more worthwhile for
you when you have a positive impact on the kids.
B. SYMPATHIZE/
EMPATHIZE - The kids will come from all types of family
backgrounds and with varying skill levels and
personalities. Do a little extra for the kids needing the
most help. Individual attention for kids can go a long
way to getting them involved in a program.
Make sure every kid has a sense of personal worth in
your program. Try to bring out the best in everyone's
personality during the summer.
C. BE MENTALLY
PREPARED - Always have a lesson plan for every day: Don't arrive
at the field hoping to come up with an idea at the last
minute. All details should be planned out prior to the
start of your program.
D. ALTERNATIVE OR
RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES - Always be prepared for rainy or inclement weather
days. Have some kind of back-up plan to replace
your original plans on rainy or bad weather days.
E. USE YOUR ABILITIES We volunteered because you had some special
abilities to add to our recreation program. We expect
to use your talents throughtout the summer. Please
volunteer those abilties that we aren't aware of. The
kids love to see their coaches/leaders in new roles.
