Hints for Coaches/Leaders <br />While good recreation leaders should not have discipline problems of any serious <br />nature, there are occasional cases of problem boys and girls, and even adults, that <br />require immediate attention. Discipline which is effective with one child will not be <br />effective with all children, so the leader must have a keen knowledge of children, their <br />interests and reactions. Discipline should have as its goal preparation for life in society. <br />The purpose is to assist the individual to acquire traits and qualities which will result in <br />adaption for the benefit of the individual and the group. <br />Discipline, to be valuable, must be positive and constructive and in direct relation to the <br />offence committed. The old type of discipline was negative and was characterized by <br />"don't". It results in creating inferiority feelings and has little value. The keynotes to the <br />entire discipline problems is "School Discipline," which involves three factors: <br />1. Have a program that will appeal to all types and all ages. <br />2. Emotionalize the material so that the children's motives will <br />be appealed to. <br />3. Have activities organized so that the social, athletic, and <br />moral wants will be satisfied. <br />In order that the recreation leader may recognize the common cause of poor discipline, <br />they are set forth herein: <br />1. Indulgence on the part of the leader will result in team members taking <br />advantage. <br />2. Lack of sympathy, irritability and a lofty commanding attitude will react <br />unfavorably on children and create a disrespect for the recreation leader. <br />3. Impertinence includes talking back, insolence and sneering remarks. Although <br />this should not be tolerated, it must be handled tactfully. <br />4. Profanity and smoking: warning for first offense, and then discipline are usually <br />effective. The recreation leaders must guard against this constantly. <br />5. Disobedience and defiance are serious problems and necessitate quick action. <br />These forms of rebellion are usually the result of antagonism toward the leader. <br />The best way to handle them is never to let them happen; however, if they do <br />occur, they should be dealt with severely. <br />Was of securing good discipline: <br />1. The best way to secure good discipline is to start the first day in a business like <br />manner <br />2. The program should be will planned, organized, and carried out <br />3. Assign responsibilities and fix interests as soon as possible <br />4. Keep everyone busy <br />
