Beginning Youth Softball Program
Program
This is a fun program designed for children 8 - 10 years old. Beginning Softball is a
program for children who want to continue playing a summer sport but don't want to
play regulation baseball. Softball uses a bigger ball compared to baseball, otherwise
the games are played similarly. This program is not designed to produce great athletes;
rather it is designed to enhance the players skills and also offers an opportunity to meet
and interact with other children in a low key, recreational setting.
Rosters
Official team rosters have been compiled by the Parks and Recreation Department. Any
changes must be approved by the Athletic Supervisor.
Playing Rules
USSSA Rules will prevail with the following modifications:
® Bases shall be 50 feet apart (approximately 16 - 18 big walking steps), with 1st
and 3rd bases being measured from home plate down the respective foul lines.
Second base should be aligned accordingly with 1st and 3rd bases.
® Each game shall be 4 innings or one hour and fifteen minutes long, which ever
comes first. Scheduled game times will be 6:00 pm and 7:15 pm.
- No new inning of the first game may start after 7:15 pm. The home
team coach's watch shall be the official time piece. The inning in
progress when the time limit concludes may be finished.
® The coach shall pitch from a distance of no less than 20 feet in front of home
plate. If a child is having trouble hitting the ball it is recommended to have the
child take a break and come up to bat later to try again.
® The ball should be pitched to the batter by an underhand motion from the team's
coach. It is the job of the coach to try to hit the bat of the batter so they can hit
the ball. Coaches should have the player take a practice swing to determine the
child's hitting area. Don't expect the player to chase after bad pitches.
Remember you are trying to teach the players hand, eye coordination.
® While batting, the only players that should be on the field are the batter and the
on -deck batter. Everyone else should remain seated in the teams batting order.
® A mask and chest protector must be worn by the catcher.
® One half inning consists of 3 outs or once through the entire batting order. All
players will bat, regardless of whether or not they are playing in the field. Batting
order will remain the same throughout the game.
® One base should be awarded on all overthrows at all the bases. This will help
speed up the games.
0 It is recommended that the maximum number of players placed in the field is 10
