Players. There should be one catcher, one pitcher, one player at all infield <br />positions, and four outfielders. The other players will then be rotated in each <br />inning with everyone getting their chance to sit on the bench. All players must <br />play a minimum of three innings in the field. <br />® Positions should be changed each inning. All players should experience playing <br />all positions. Coaches should start to emphasize position specific play so that <br />the children learn what each position does. <br />® Where there are boys and girls on the teams the following distribution applies: <br />Boys may play pitcher and/or catcher and this in not included in the distribution <br />figures: <br />Number of Boys Infield Outfield <br />1 Open Open <br />2 1 1 <br />3 1 1 open 1 <br />4 2 2 <br />® Coaches from both teams should agree on all the rules before the game. <br />Modifying the rules is OK, if both coaches agree and it will make the game fair <br />and fun for the kids <br />® All players will shake hands at the completion of the game. Coaches should <br />stress the learning of good sportsmanship. <br />® Scores and standings will not be kept, a philosophy of skill development, <br />teamwork, and fun will be stressed. <br />Sportsmanship <br />Profanity and personal baiting of opponents by players or spectators shall not be <br />permitted. Abusive baiting is defined as remarks referring to the nationality, religion, <br />creed, or physical characteristics of an individual. The coaches shall remove anyone <br />from the game for violating this rule. (Note: Coaches are responsible for the behavior <br />of their team and their fans.) <br />Rain Out Policy <br />Where weather is a factor, the coach of each team should contact the Parks and <br />Recreation Department after 4:00 pm on the date of the game to find out if the games <br />have been cancelled. If the Recreation Department states that the games are on, each <br />team should report to their assigned fields; if the field is unplayable, a mutual decision <br />between coaches should be made at the field. Players are to call their coaches to find <br />out if the game has been postponed, not the Parks and Recreation Department. <br />Tips for Beqinning Youth Softball Coaches. <br />® Start teaching your players about force outs. 'Teach your players where to throw <br />the ball when there is runners on base and it is hit to them. Stress to players <br />they should know what to do if the ball is hit to them. Develop drills to teach the <br />players this concept. <br />® Teach position specific skills. Show the players where to stand. Explain what <br />each position should do when the ball is hit to that spot. Develop drills to teach <br />the unique skills for each position. <br />
