MEMO TO: PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSIONERS
FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR
PARKS, RECREATION & FORESTRY
DATE: JANUARY 17, 1994
SUBJECT: LLLL FIELD IMPROVEMENT DONATION
I wish to inform you of a joint venture that the City of Mounds
View will be undertaking with the Little Lakes Little League.
One of the board members approached us with an offer of donating
$470.00 for a contribution for installing safety fencing for the
players benches at Oakwood Park field, the field scheduled for
use by LLLL. Forty-seven players from the City of Mounds View
participated in the LLLL in 1993. As part of LLLL registration
fee is $10 for capital improvements. Each facility used by LLLL
is evaluated and priorities are made for improvements. Oakwood
Park field needs a safety fence to ward off foul balls that could
potentially go into the players bench areas hitting participants.
Therefore the LLLL is offering the $470 as a contribution to the
improvement.
I think that this is a real advancement into cooperative
activities with youth athletic associations who typically have
had an attitude that the Cities should provide the facilities
without contribution from the associations even though the
associations receive fees from participants.
I propose that we accept the proposal and contribution and put in
the safety fencing. This is the beginning of a good joint
cooperative with the LLLL, one that we can possibly use as an
example with other youth athletic associations including the IBA
and MVAA who traditionally provide no contributions to the City,
but continue to gripe about the facilities and allocation of city
funding for improvements.
I wish to discuss this further at the meeting. Come with your
thoughts and suggestions.
