Paul, MN 55ll6
698-4543
Vento receives Congressman Bruce Vento received the Friends recognition for his many years of
service to the parks of Minnesota, and the nation at the annual meeting. The award
Public Service
is presented annually to an elected or appointed official who has made an outstand-
Award ing contribution to parks through efforts to promote, preserve, protect and fund.
Vento has been Minnesota's Mr. Park in Washington, D.C. He currently is chair of
the National Park,Forest and Public Lands subcommittee. Among the major
legislation he has authored are:
Boundary Water Canoe Area legislation, 1978,to preserve the area as a wilderness.
• Alaska Lands Legislation, 1980, created parks, designated wild and scenic rivers.
Urban Recreation and At-Risk Youth Act, 1984, authorizes competitive matching
grants to urban areas with a high crime rate to expand park and recreation opportuni-
ties for youth. St.Paul received a$50,000 grant.
Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, 1986,provides protection of the
Mississippi River as a national resource.
Previous award recipients are State Representative Tom Ostoff and Ramsey County
Commissioner Dick Wedell.
Park Volunteers Cliff Carrey's one man,thirteen-year,effort to preserve and protect Swede Hollow
named Park earned him the Park Volunteer of the Year award for 1994. Carrey's dedica-
tion makes it clear he takes to heart the admonition"bloom where you are planted".
Carrey bought his home at the edge of the Park and just assumed that the park was
both his to use,and protect. Up at 5:00(that is in the morning!)he heads for the
park to relax and keep an eye on things. Twice a week he totes a long a trash bag for
a bit of"light cleaning". Once a month, with a special permit from the Park's
Division,he trundles down the hollow in his pickup and hauls out a load of trash.
Spending about 150 hours last year doing clean up,he has hauled out tons of stuff
others dumped there.
Carrey is an example of stewardship and commitment. He has shared his vision of
111 personal responsibility with his children, and now with the community. Thank you
Cliff. You are what makes Minnesota Nice.
