Park Notes 2 <br /> Also recognized for their special volunteer contributions are: • <br /> Madelon Cassavant for work in the Japanese Garden the Como Conservatory. <br /> Cassavant has continued a family tradition. Her father, William E. McMahon, was <br /> the first Zoo Superintendent and monkey island the zoo house were built on his <br /> watch. <br /> • <br /> Jack Olson for coordinating a remarkably successful community clean-up and <br /> development of the Como Park Community Forestry plan. Olson continues his <br /> commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Como Park and enhancement <br /> through additional plantings and maintenance of existing plants. <br /> David and Joey Radcliffe, (ages 6 and 3) for demonstrating that it is never to early <br /> to be a role model and if you are big enough to walk, you can probably be a park <br /> volunteer. Hard workers during the April park clean-up day, they gathered three <br /> trash bags of litter. In their regular forays to Crosby Park with parents, Tom and <br /> Leslie, they tote along trash bags and gather the litter they spy along the trails. <br /> Barbara Rose for leadership on the St. Paul Park Commission and in the Prospect <br /> Park Improvement Association. Through Rose's and the Association's efforts, the <br /> park now has many flowers and shrubs, and$123,000 in the 1995 Capitol Improve- <br /> ment Budget for structural changes in the park. <br /> Phil Zinc for years of dedicated service at the Tamarack Nature Center. Have you <br /> ever tried to get 140 candles to burn at the same time? Talk to Zinc. For the"Cross <br /> Country Ski by the Silvery Moon"he placed 140 luminaries along 3.5 miles of ski <br /> trail by dragging two loaded toboggans behind his snow mobile. • <br /> Pillow receives Sarah Pillow received a special recognition award for her volunteer efforts on behalf <br /> special award of the Friends. In what some times seems to be the project of the decade, Pillow has <br /> spent countless hours helping produce a directory of all public recreation facilities in <br /> Ramsey County. After the results of her work finally go to press,Pillow will receive <br /> an even more important award, seeing her final product in the hands of thousands of <br /> Ramsey county residents and visitors. <br /> Board Changes Milt Krona, long time Friends board member has decided to take his retirement <br /> Krona retires seriously. He aims to spend as much time as possible with wife, Marlene, at their <br /> lake place in the north woods. We will miss his sense of humor,his persistent <br /> advocacy, and his good advice. Fish? Beware! Milt is on his way. Best wishes, <br /> and if the quiet of the north becomes too quite,there is always space on the board! <br /> Marsha Soucheray completed her term as President of the Friends, and true to her <br /> vow not to become"president for life", declined a second term as president but will <br /> continue on the board. Stepping into the role of president is Jeanne Weigum, charter <br /> member of the board and co-editor of the newsletter. "My goal is to try to accom- <br /> plish as much as we can with our limited resources. Sometimes that will mean we <br /> have to say, 'No' to a specific proposal. It is easy for a small organization to be <br /> spread so thin nothing gets done. The need is so great it is tempting to try to do it <br /> all. I'll be satisfied if we merely accomplish small miracles." <br /> Dan Collins and Carol Osip were newly elected to the board at the annual meetir <br /> Collins is the Recreation Services Supervisor,Trails and Waterways Unit of the <br /> Department of Natural Resources.
