1994 ICE RINK COMPLAINT LOG
Tuesday, January 11, 1994: 4:40 p.m.
Mr. Oliverius, Atoms Coach for Lake Region Hockey
Association, came into the office to complain that the
hockey rink at Lambert was not swept. It was explained that
the hockey rink had been swept in the morning but because it
continued to snow all day that the snow continued to
accumulate after the Steve, daytime park crew left for the
day. The policy has been that rinks will be swept after
snow stops falling. It was explained that staff did not
feel that it was appropriate to call for over -time when the
snow continued to fall, especially considering that the park
is only open four hours because it was a school night and
the rink hours are 4-8 p.m. In addition it was explained
that the rink would be swept and flooded in the evening
after rinks close on the night shift considering that the
snow stops falling.
In addition Mr. Oliverius requested additional shovels than
the three already at Lambert Park. Staff informed Mr.
that the City would purchase two additional scoop shovels
and have them at Lambert Park building by the weekend. Mr.
Oliverius was expressed his appreciation for the additional
shovels and said that he understood our policy regarding the
snowfall stating that he and the other parents would shovel
the ice during these conditions since it is a rare occasion
that his practice would be at the same time that an
afternoon on-going snowfall would be occurring.
Friday, January 31, 1994
On Friday, January 28 staff received a telephone call from
the father of a skater that was involved in a fight at
Hillview Park rink. The skater was a teenage male who had a
fist to cuffs scuffle on the pleasure skating rink at
Hillview Park. The one boy cut the other boy's mouth with
his hockey stick during the fight. The injured boy went
into the rink house for aid. The rink attendant, after
attending the injury of the boy demanded that the other boy
leave the park. The boy did not comply at first but later
entered the park building and continued -to taunt the injured
boy. The rink attendant demanded that the boy leave the
park. He was again non -complying. Verbal fighting resumed
in the park building. The rink attendant became more
aggressive in his authority and gave the boy a shove on his
should as he was sitting in a chair. The boy's head hit the
wall. The boy finally left. The next day the father of the
boy called and complained that the rink attendant "hit" his
son. He demanded that the rink attendant be fired. After
providing the father with the entire story, he became a
