!.-1, .
MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS
FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR M 3
- PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
DATE: JULY 5, 1989
SUBJECT: SILVER VIEW PARK PATHWAY DITCH
Public works has requested the installation of a vehicular passageway across the
western outlet ditch at the site of the Silver View Park pathway extension project.
Currently a small pedestrian bridge is present. When the pathway extension is
installed, a larger passageway must be replaced on the higher grade to evade
swamping the passage during very heavy rainstorm drainage. It was originally
planned that an adequate wooden pedestrian bridge similar to the present bridge be
built and installed on the upper ridge. However, the public works department has
recently requested a facility which is maneuverable with a maintenance vehicle, to
enable quicker maintenance upkeep of the pathway aitd for trash removal detail. '[ire
cost of two culvert options are:
Ontinn -ii - aa" m—due" $ 6,500.00
Option #2 - Metal arch $13,000.00
A third option is a metal bridge adequate to serve vehicular use.
Option #3 - Inexpensive pedestrian
bridge which would barely allow
a small pick-up truck $20,000.00 or
$25,000.00
Ti,c. size and style of the second culvert option has been recommended by City
Engineer Minetor. It will be large enough to handle the five year storm. (See
attached information.)
As you can see, the most inexpensive option is the placement of a culvert. There are
two culvert options and City Engineer Minetor recommends the metal arch at an
estimated price of $13,000. It has a greater water volume capacity than the 48"
culvert. The cost of the bridge, option #3, is about twice the cost of installing a
culvert.
There are advantages and disadvantages to installation of a facility passable by
Advantaees:
1. The advantage is ti,ai nark mainrenar. c cn the trail could be much speedier if
a maintenance vehicle were able to cross at that point and continue around the
pathway for maintenance, trash removal and inspections.
