In both cities, wall signs cannot <br />exceed building height (e.g. cannot be on roof). Although Shoreview would allow up to 424 sq <br />ft, wall sign height is limited to 20% of building height (3.6’ X 117.7’ wall sign at The Bear Lot). <br /> <br />Issues to consider: <br />1. Are businesses suffering from a lack of signage? Yes and No. In recent years, Caribou <br />Cabin and Win Insurance have complained about trees blocking their signs. <br /> <br />2. Are signs regulated fairly? Yes and No. Yes; signs are regulated equally according to <br />zoning district and type of sign. No #1; many businesses are zoned PUD. PUD regulations <br />are established by the City Council, case-by-case. If the PUD does not specify what <br />signage is allowed, then it reverts to the most applicable zoning district. No #2; older <br />businesses (e.g. Steve’s Appliance, The Station) have larger non-conforming signs that <br />have been grandfathered in. No #3; some businesses have received Variances to increase <br />their signage (e.g. BP, Days Inn, McDonalds (height), Saturn 7, Allegiance Fitness (size). <br /> <br />3. If signs were larger, would they beautify the corridor? <br /> <br />4. Should rooftop signs be permitted? Should icons be excluded from sign <br />calculations? Example; is the on the McDonalds sign advertising or art?
