MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks and Recr-a 1.n Commissioners
FROM: Bruce K. Anderson ..1 tr
Parks , Recreation ani . -sty
DATE: March 19 , 1982
RE: Closed Schools: Impact on Community Usage
Enclosed is a report staff prepared regarding the impact the four school
closings will have on community usage. The report is quite lengthy so
I would like to summarize our basic conclusions :
1 . With the proposed school closings of Edgewood and Johanna Jr.
High Schools it is projected that there would be a shortage
of 1 ,326 gym hours in 1982-83.
2. It appears to be financially feasible judging from initial cost
estimates to operate a third junior high on a skeletal basis
( i .e. gyms, pool , locker rooms , etc. ) .
3. Past track records for operating secondary schools as resource
centers have proven to be quite successful .
4. The impact that the closed schools will have on Mounds View and
Arden Hills is immediate and quite devastating.
The staff report concludes with the recommendations that the School Board
retain one of the secondary school facilities as a community resource center
and "mothball " the remaining three schools until further research can be
conducted to determine their best use. This recommendation has been adopted
by the Community Education Advisory Council and staff will be presenting the
report and recommendation to the School Board on Monday evening , March 22, 1982.
1110 During my recent meetings with the School District staff, we have been informed
that the Superintendent p t has already strongly recommended that Edgewood be re-
tained as a resource center. The final disposition of Edgewood will be determined
by mid-April .
