Closed Schools: Impact on Community Usage
Page 2
111/1
ANALYSIS
I . What is the current facility usage of the gymnasium spaces at the secondary
school buildings?
School District staff tabulated total gymnasium usage for the four secondary
school buildings . The tabulations were based on the available gym spaces
which are as follows:
Chippewa 3
Edgewood 3
Highview 2
Johanna 3
The available hours of community usage , which are as follows:
Weekdays 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. (5 hours)
• Saturdays 8:00 - 4:00 p.m. (8 hours)
We then based our figures for potential weekday and Saturday usage by multiplying
the number of gym spaces by the number of usage hours , by the number of days
available. We then compared our potential usage with that of actual usage for all
four schools as it currently exists and then drew a comparison of actual school
usage with the Edgewood and Johanna gymnasium facilities not available. A third
comparison was made showing the peak gymnasium usage time for six months, ranging
from October - March which are listed in Addendum B. The final comparison outlined
in Addendum C shows the actual gymnasium usage as it compares to the availability
of three secondary school facilities.
From the charts a number of conclusions may be drawn:
1. On a year round basis the current actual weekday usage will exceed
the potential week day usage of Chippewa and Highview by 173 hours
assuming optimum school usage which is not feasible.
2. The actual Saturday usage of 1 ,573.5 hours could be met assuming
11111 the optimum usage of Chippewa and Highview with a balance of 82.5
hours which, again , is not realistic.
