The projected <br /> mothballing costs of $50,000 for Edgewood include $20,000 for utilities and $30,000 <br /> for one time mothballing costs. <br /> Although the figures are difficult to interpolate if you took the total square feet <br /> of the building which is 100,494 and divide that out on a square foot basis, the <br /> costs to maintain just the minimum utilities for the gymnasium, pool and locker room <br /> area would be $18,114.80 based on 16,468 square feet (assuming you could totally <br /> isolate the gymnasium, 7 ,380 square feet, the cafeteria , 3,080 square feet, and the <br /> pool , 6,048 square feet) . If you took the figure of $18,114.80 plus the custodial <br /> cost of approximately $24,000 and subtracted the $20,000 allocated for utilities under <br /> the mothballing program, you would arrive at a projected annual operation and <br /> maintenance cost of $22,144. This figure, although extremely difficult to substantiate, <br /> provides one other perspective from which to view the "mothballing" or "do nothing" <br /> approach. <br /> 111/1 In addition , past experience from other School Districts have shown that utility <br /> costs drop considerably (as much as 30%) when an alternative use of the school <br /> is put into effect. <br /> The Advisory Council also looked at the feasibility of isolating the swimming pool <br /> costs which again were difficult to seperate but utility projections for heat, lights , <br /> chemicals , etc. were estimated between $17,000 - $25,000. One other difficulty with <br /> this projection is that there is a need for a part time custodian for the operation <br /> of the pool which would cost approximately $10,000. The difficulty with this is that <br /> the current custodial contract does not allow for a part time custodian to work by <br /> himself in the pool area. <br /> In summary,with respect to operational costs ; the building, because of it 's large size <br /> and present use, is not only expensive to operate but also difficult to accurately <br /> project what the cost may be under an alternative use. One statement we do feel <br /> comfortable with is that the operation and maintenance cost of any of the four schools <br /> 111/0 <br /> proposed to be closed would be considerably less than current costs if operated on a <br /> skeletal basis , i .e. gyms, locker rooms and pool areas. <br />
