•
Closed Schools: Impact on Community Usage
Page 9
•
2. Longer traveling distance for recreation programs.
3. Edgewood has the City of Mounds View's only tennis courts ,
full size gymnasium, football field, running track, and paved
trail system.
4. All City tennis instruction is held at Edgewood Junior High.
5. The City utilizes the four baseball/softball fields on a
Monday - Thursday basis from 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. , May 1 -
September 1 .
6. Mounds View currently has only one developed park south of Highway 10
and Edgewood has the only ballfields south of Highway 10.
In summary, the immediate impact of the closing of Edgewood and Johanna Junior High
111/1
Schools will affect all five municipalities as well as the School District. In addition
to the actual facility usage shortage there will be an intangible impact on both
Mounds View and Arden Hills from a community identity perspective. The loss of one's
neighborhood schools, although difficult to measure, can be seen in community apathy,
decreased volunteer involvement, detachment from the School District and a feeling of
isolation.
RECOMMENDATION
There are three options that appear to be possible regarding the closed schools:
1. Joint Venturing and/or Community Resource Center
Joint venturing is the sharing of space, administrative personnel , and dollars
by a school and one or more of the agencies of municipal government, private
enterprise or non-profit organizations.
•
