4111
MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM: Staff
DATE: February 24, 1982
SUBJECT: Forestry Program Update
In an attempt to keep the Commission abreast of our City Forestry
program, staff has three issues to bring to your attention. The
first is the City Council formally approved an addendum to allow
for the Cities of Mounds View and New Brighton to have just one
tree contractor in 1982 . We will be opening up our tree contractors
bids for 1982 on Thursday, February 25, 1982 . Assuming that we do
not have an inordinate amount of bidders, staff will be reviewing
the contractors bids with the Commission Thursday evening.
The second issue is that staff is presently in the process of
organizing a mass tree planting in celebration of Arbor Day. Our
plans at this time include the planting of approximately 1, 500
• seedlings and 275 mature trees on some Saturday in April . Once we
work out the details we will be in contact with the Commissioners
requesting their support.
The third issue is that we are in the process of hiring Mr. Odas
Newton as our summer forestry assistant. Mr. Newton is a retired
Mounds View resident (he lives next door to Groveland Park with the
beautiful flower and vegetable garden) . We are extremely pleased
to have a man of Mr. Newton' s caliber as he has a degree in Forestry
and his hobbies are gardening and forestry related issues. Mr. Newton
will be responsible for the flowers around City Hall, establishing
new planters, and assisting City Forester Wriskey.
Staff has tentatively planned on having Rick attend our March meeting
to update the Commission on forestry related issues.
BKA/bc
•
