School Board Meeting (November 30, 1981 ) MOUNDS VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOLS 11111 SUPERINTENDENT'S RECOMMENDATION FOR THE CLOSING OF TWO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND TWO JUNIOR HIGH/MIDDLE SCHOOLS • Elementary School Closings 1 . Ralph R. Reeder Elementary 2. Red Oak Elementary • Junior High/Middle School Closings 1 . Edgewood Junior High 2. Johanna Middle RATIONALE FOR THE SCHOOL CLOSINGS 1 . School Closing Criteria The criteria in Policy #3520 were the major determinants used in recommending school closings. The administrative ranking of the school closing criteria indicate that Ralph R. Reeder, Red Oak, Edgewood Junior High and Johanna Middle Schools should be closed. 1110 Another major reason for closing Edgewood rather than Highview is based on Edgewood's lower student capacity. In that only one junior high/middle school will serve the western area of the District, the school with the greatest capacity should be kept open. 2. Maintenance of Nieghborhoods The K-6, 7-8, 9-12 grade organization maintains as many elementary neighborhoods as feasible considering such factors as enrollment decline, boundary adjustments, long-term program needs of the District, and fiscal responsibility. 3. Permanency of Boundaries Permanency of boundaries can be maintained for several years, Also, a balance of student populations (east and west) is accomplished. 4. Maximum Use of Space The plan is cost efficient. All schools are deliberately filled to capacity so that space and staff are used efficiently. Cost savings are maximized, of course. 5. Closing of Smaller Buildings The schools named in the recommendation are the elementary and junior 11111 high/middle schools with the lowest student capacity. The remaining larger schools accommodate the student population more efficiently.
