MOUNDS VIEW PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY DEPARTMENT
2401 HIGHWAY 10
MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA 55112
784-3055
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN YOUTH
VOLUNTEER COACHES AND THE CITY OF MOUNDS VIEW
11111
Coaches Philosophy:
You are a teacher, amateur psychologist, substitute parent, and important role model --
in other words , you 're a coach. We have an important responsibility to the kids to
provide competent guidance and instruction in the techniques and strategies of the sport,
and to create a psychologically healthy situation in which they can derive the positive
benefits of sports participation. By creating such an atmosphere, we can all be winners
regardless of our win-loss record. What kids carry away with them will endure for longer
than the outcome of a game. If kids leave the program having enjoyed relating to you and
to their teammates , feeling better about themselves , having improved their skills , and
looking forward to further sports participation , you have accomplished something far more
important than a winning record or a league championship.
Purpose Statement:
The purpose of the following guidelines is to develop an outline of the policies and
philosophies of the Mounds View Parks and Recreation Department toward youth sports.
•Our goal is to provide:
1. Varied opportunities to develop specific motor skills associated with
many sports. Children should be exposed to a variety of sport opportunities ,
with increasing emphasis on performance as the child matures.
2. Opportunities to practice wholesome competition. Competition is part of the
American lifestyle. But undue importance should not be attached to the outcome
of this competition with young children. Skill development and the opportunity
to participate should be stressed. Parents and coaches should encourage the
child to judge his/her performance according to ability, rather than the outcome
of the contest. As children mature, the outcomes of contests can become more
important.
3. Many opportunities for social interaction. Youth sports offer many opportunities
for desirable social development within and among families . The game enables
families to get together and interact with others , which leagues and coaches should
111/1
encourage. Social events , such as picnics and covered dish suppers within both a
team and a league, contribute to family togetherness and desirable behavior of all
those involved in youth sports .
