9/3/81 - Silver Lake Wood Development -4-
III. Summary and Recommendations
1. All exposed soils should be vegetatively stabilized as soon as possible
following rough grading. It would be advisable to limit exposure to only those
sites being developed at any given time. The sandy fine texture of the soils
make for extreme wind erosion potential. It should be noted that the only
successful means of controlling wind erosion is to limit soil exposure. Suggestions
for temporary and permanent vegetative covers are given in Appendix B.
2. Development of Tract F will require excavation of organic soil material and
replacement with suitable mineral soil material. It is recommended that replaced
soils be allowed to settle one year prior to development.
3. The proposed holding pond and corresponding outlet structure in Tract F
should have adequate capacity to handle a 100 year storm.
4. All overland flows be kept below 4. 5 cfs to maintain vegetative cover.
5. Ponding area slopes of Tract F be stabilized as soon as pond excavation
is complete.
6. All storm sewer inlets should be protected by hay bale dikes or other
suitable filter dikes during project development phases. Suggestions for
filtering dikes are given in Appendix C.
7. Sodded, drainage swails should be constructed as soon as possible in Tract
D to act as filter strips.
8. Roadways and curbing should be installed prior to site construction. A
narrow sodded filter strip would be advisable adjacent to roadways.
9. All storm sewer outlets should have stable spillways to eliminate scouling.
10. The use of hay bales or other suitable sediment dike measures are necessary
along the entire perimeter of the park ponding area.
11. The landscaping and development of the proposed pond and park must be done
in stages to eliminate the exposure of large areas.
12. The importance for adequate soil cover cannot be over stressed. Rough
calculations using the universal wind loss equation indicates that up to 10.8
tons of soil per acre per year could be lost. This would translate to approx-
imately 60 20-yard dump trucks per year if the entire site were left bare.
13. Appendix D lists the potential seed mixtures for the park and commons
areas of the plat.
If you have any questions regarding erosion control and terf establishment,
please contact the Ramsey Soil and Water Conservation District Office.
Sincerely,
Yis-1-;-avt2
Tom Petersen, Conservation Specialist
Enclosure
