Parks and Recreation monthly report Page 2 . .
A brief highlight of two of these programs is as follows :
Snoball Tournament •
The first snoball tournament was held the weekend of January 31 and February 1 .
Five men's teams and four co-rec teams participated. The events ran smoothly
even without the intended snow. Mrs. Jaycees sold concessions at City Hall .
The Championship games were held Sunday. The tournament is easily run with no
need for maintenance of fields. The participants seemed to enjoy the challenge
and to pioneer the cold and snow (on Sunday) . Snow definitely is an enhancing
factor and hopefully in years to come this activity will include lots of nice,
soft, fluffy snow.
The low entry fee of $35.00/team covered all costs of the tournament.
Gadabouts
The monthly January Gadabout trip was to the General Mills Betty Crocker Kitchens,
Byerly' s store and gift shops and 50th and France mall . The trip included Shoreview
registrations and the total number of participants was 45, the maximum. Since
Mounds View and Shoreview Cities have combined Gadabout trips, the program has grown
in interest. With over five years of nurturing, the trips now fill to capacity, with
few or no trip cancellations, which in turn keeps the prices lower due to greater
group discounts .
•
Park Development
There were three major issues that took place in our park development program:
1 . Finalization and approval by the Parks and Recreation Commission
of the City Wide Parks and Open Space Plan.
2. Silver View Park land acquisition was finalized.
3. The City Council approved the hiring of Saunders/Thalden
and Associates for the ititial site planning of Silver View
Park.
Our Forestry program suffered a major loss in January with the passing of
Mr. Jack Shields as our Forester on December 31, 1981. Staff prepared a memo
for the Council 's review regarding the future status of this position and we
are presently awaiting their reply. 41/
