time staff person. Five hours a day, five days a week service
would seem appropriate. Weekend custodial work would be part of
the rental fee for wedding receptions, etc.
OPTION - City Hall employs a custodian for 15 - 20 hours a week.
Combine this with the community center with an additional 25
hours a week and it becomes a full time position. This is a
benefit in the fact that the custodian is available to perform
small repair tasks and provide consistency to the position. The
cost of a full time custodian at $10 - 14 per hour plus benefits
would be approximately $24 , 000 - 32 , 000.
EVENING FACILITY SUPERVISOR
Evening and weekend facility supervisor/manager would be
required. This could be an hourly position. Primary duty would
be opening and closing the facility and providing security and
direction to scheduled users of the facility during evenings and
weekends . An hourly wage of $3 . 00 would be appropriate. This
position could be partially subsidized through activity and
rental fees.
YOUTH SUPERVISOR
If the Community Center emphasizes a youth/teen center, it is
• imperative that a youth supervisor is hired. The key to
successful teen centers is the staff person - someone who relates
to youth, provides good direction and role modeling, someone who
youth trust and look towards for leadership. It is possible that
this full time position could be funded through a partnership
with Youth and Family Services - already being a precedent
at Shoreview Community Center.
Cost for a Youth Supervisor would be approximately $28 , 000 -
36, 000 including benefits . Hours would be 2 : 00 - 10 : 00 p.m.
Monday through Fridays. Summer and school vacation hours may
vary to accommodate times to better accommodate youth. The
position would be housed out of the Community Center, but
activities would be held in the community center, out in the
community, as well as out-of-community taking advantage of other
opportunities such as camps, trips, and resources.
IN CONCLUSION
Community Center staffing would minimally require custodial
services and facility supervision. The City would need to employ
a youth/teen supervisor if a youth focus is to be successful .
Current Parks and Recreation office staff could provide daytime
facilitation Mondays through Fridays if they relocated offices to
the Community Center.
