The objectives of the City' s program are to remove all trees
or wood capable of spreading Dutch elm and oak wilt diseases and to take
necessary steps to bring the spread of these diseases under control .
The first step in controlling these diseases is to detect and destroy any elm
or oak logs that may serve as over-wintering or breeding sites for elm bark
beetles or oak wilt spores . Elm bark beetles will emerge from elm logs and
11111 spread Dutch elm disease to nearby healthy elms. Oak wilt spores can be spread
from infected red oak logs to nearby healthy oaks in the spring and early sumer.
On — your wood was inspected and suspicious logs
marked with orange paint. You, as a homeowner, are asked to render this wood
safe. To do this , you can burn the wood in the fireplace or wood stove , remove
all the bark from the wood, or haul it to a sanitary landfill . Oak wood may
also be split and/or wrapped. (See Wood Removal Procedures). Wrapping in plastic
does not apply to elm wood.
•
Your wood pile will be re-inspected on •
Following re-inspection, any remaining marked materials must be removed under
contract with a private firm. The cost of this removal , per cubic
yard, will be billed or assessed to your property.
If you have any questions regarding this process , please call the Mounds View
Park, Recreation and: Forestry Department at 784-3055, extension 1131. Your
11111 cooperation is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Richard F. Wris
