Lear Composting • what do you do with the leaves you rake in the ',fall? This year you can briny them to the City ' s new centralized leaf composting site , which is the result of a cooperative project between Mounds 1111 View and the Ramsey County Public Health Department . The venture is part of Ramsey County ' s ongoing emphasis on waste abatement -- reducing the amount of solid waste going to landfills . About 800 tons of leaves are available for composting in Mounds View, by composting them we are preserving valuable landfill space and creating a useful end product , humus . On Saturdays , Sundays and Wednesdays between October 22 and November 13 , residents will he able to bring their leaves to the site for disposal . The leaves will then be piled into a windrow ( a long pile ) and watered down . Over the next year the windrow will be turned over four Limes to aid decomposition . In about 1- 1/2 years , residents will able to pick up the end product , which is very useful as a soil amendment . Plans call for the site t:o be used permanently -- this underscores the City ' s dedication to composting as an alternative to burying yard waste in landfills . ti Composting leaves is an appealing alternative to landfilling them because it is an environmentally sound means of disposal . Composting is a natural component of soil . Humus, when applied to a lawn or garden , helps the soil retain water , reduces surface crusting and erosion , and increases the organic content of the soil . When leaves are buried in landfills they use up increasingly scarce space , decompose slowly , and do not become a • useful end product . Composting looks even better when the cost of siting and operating landfills is considered . Composting is , a low-cost , low- tech disposal method with a good track record : Nature has been doing it for millions of years . We can be proud that Mounds View is one of the communities in Ramsey County that is taking the lead in waste abatement . 13ut composting can only succeed with widespread community support . Bring your leaves to our composting site - this fall -- you ' ll help preserve dwindling landfill space and , in about 18 months , will get free dirt to hoot .
