R AMSE Y COUNTY
NEWS RELEASE
LEAF COMPOSTING
•
August 18, 1983 Ramsey County Public Health Department
Environmental Health Division
CONTACT: Brian Golob, Zack Hansen
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1910 West County Road B Suite 209
Roseville, MN 55113
633-0316
What do you do with 30,000 tons of leaves? That is how much
yard waste comes out of Ramsey County each fall, and officials
here are trying to keep those leaves from being buried in landfills .
S The Public Health Department is siting several centralized
composting sites in the northern suburbs and the City of St. Paul,
where the annual autumnal deluge will be converted into a useful
soil amendment. If all goes as planned residents of these areas
will have a free leaf disposal site available in late October and
early November.
The Environmental Health division is cooperating with the
cities of Mounds View, Arden Hills, New Brighton, and Shoreview,
and St. Paul Planning Districts 1, 5, 11, and 16 to locate
suitable sites . The program is part of Ramsey County's ongoing
effort to reduce the amount of refuse going to landfills. At
each site the yard waste will be pushed into piles and composted,
until the leaves have decayed into humus, a rich soil conditioner.
1110
In about 18 months the finished compost will be available for
residents to put on gardens and lawns.
#1/#
