MEMO TO: Mounds ' ew Parks and Recreation Commission
4111 FROM: St 4t
DATE: October 24 , 1984
RE: Compost Program Update
This is just a short note to keep the Commission abreast of the
City' s current composting program which commenced operation on
Wednesday, October 17 , 1984. The program, once again , has pro-
ven to be extremely successful , and we were almost forced to
close the operation down on Sunday, October 21 , as we could no
longer accommodate any more leaves at the site . The City staff
has since remedied that problem by restockpiling the leaves. The
program has proven to be extremely popular and the current in-
gress and egress method with having two gates, has certainly
proved to be popular.
As a side note , not only are we seeing the benefit of composting
leaves, but the vast majority of people, over 60% , are no longer
purchasing plastic trash bags, but are using trailers and other
means to haul their leaves to the composting site .
As a final comment regarding composting , the existing leaves and
compost material has decomposed to a level making excellent humus
for your garden site . We have already had requests, and dis-
• tributed approximately one-quarter of our compost material . We
feel that by next spring when we advertise the availability of
compost, there will be no problem in recycling the material back
into the community.
Once again , staff would encourage each of the Park Commissioners
to stop by the composting site during its open hours to experi-
ence this site on a first-hand basis.
BKA/sll
MOUNDS VIEW COMPOSTING SITE
The site is located in Ardan Park near the corner of
Ardan Avenue and Long Lake Road.
Bring your leaves to the site, dump them, and take
your bags home with you.
