-2- <br /> AQUATICS UPDATE Aquatic Director Maureen Thielen was intro- <br /> duced by Director Anderson and she present- <br /> ed her report highlighting the summer beach <br /> and pool programs. Ms. Thielen indicated <br /> that the Lakeside Park program was managed <br /> by a joint staff of twelve guards with <br /> Sue Bernhagen serving as the head life- <br /> guard. The beach opened on June 9 , 1984 <br /> and is slated to close on Saturday, August <br /> 25 . The beach is being supervised through <br /> an on-call system with three guards sched- <br /> uled for the evening and three in the <br /> afternoon with an additional guard avail- <br /> able on call should the weather and/or <br /> crowds demand it. Ms. Thielen further <br /> indicated that Pat DeMars had been retained <br /> to coordinate the concession operation and <br /> that it had been running smoothly to date . <br /> The Edgewood Pool program was reviewed <br /> including the new lesson structure , and <br /> open swim dates. Highlights of the Edge- <br /> wood Pool program include the Red Cross lap <br /> program, semi-private lessons , expanded <br /> open swim dates, senior citizen exercise <br /> programs and the adapted aquatic programs . <br /> Preliminary indications are that registra- <br /> tions for both open swims and lessons have • <br /> increased at the pool facility as well as <br /> increased attendance at Lakeside Beach. <br /> Ms. Thielen also stated that both facil- <br /> ities had received a face lift with new <br /> paint and equipment purchases . <br /> Director Anderson outlined his discussion <br /> with Councilmember Conde from Spring Lake <br /> Park regarding the construction of a monu- <br /> ment in honor of Playground, Inc . which <br /> will be built by the Kraus Hartig VFW Post. <br /> REVIEW OF 1985 BUDGET Director Anderson reviewed the budget and <br /> PROPOSAL indicated that staff requests for 1985 <br /> would be maintained at a 3. 2% level as dir- <br /> ected by the City Council . To maintain <br /> this minimal budget increase ; no program <br /> growth is projected with minor program <br /> cutbacks in the summer playground program <br /> and winter skating budgets. In addition a <br /> $50 ,000 capital improvement request had <br /> been submitted for the City Council ' s re- <br /> view and the City Council would be formally <br /> Council would be formally reviewing the <br /> staff budget proposal at the August 6 , 1984 • <br /> agenda session . <br />
